Is it possible to capture trust? How can one create a safe space where vulnerability becomes strength — a foundation for something profound and beautiful?

In this unique artist talk, Angelika Kollin will open the layers behind Tender Ground and speak about her journey as both a person and a photographer.

During the event, we will talk about trust between artist and subject, and about creating a safe space; about intimacy and rituals; about Angelika’s Estonian roots and returning to a home audience; about how personal history, trauma, and longing are woven into her portraits; and about her collaboration with people in front of the lens — “how we give each other strength and courage.”

We welcome everyone drawn to documentary photography, contemporary portraiture, art rooted in empathy, and the journeys of growing both as a person and as an artist.

The event takes place as part of Angelika Kollin’s solo exhibition Tender Ground (23.08–23.11.2025).

My ongoing project delves into the complex realm of modern parenthood, aiming to meditate on and examine its essence while unraveling its underlying driving forces. What began as two separate projects, "You are my Mother" and "You are my Father," evolved into an intertwined exploration, leading to a much grander and fundamental question: What defines parenthood in our present-day world? The initial focus was on examining the unique experiences of individuals of motherhood and fatherhood. However, as the puzzle pieces gradually intertwined, a more profound question emerged that contemplated the very nature of parenthood itself. The project expanded its scope, embracing the diverse aspects that shape our understanding of being a parent today. Our desire to belong is pivotal in shaping our approach and thoughts regarding family life. We seek connection and purpose, yearning to create and be part of a loving and nurturing environment. This deep-rooted longing extends beyond mere membership in a family unit and encompasses the profound journey of becoming parents in our adulthood. Fortunately, our current time offers unprecedented options and opportunities for parenthood. The evolving landscape of parenthood in the contemporary world highlights the intricate interplay between societal changes, personal aspirations, and the fundamental human need for connection and belonging. Traditional roles and societal expectations are being redefined, making space for more inclusive and diverse narratives.

You are My Father by Angelika Kollin You are my Father series was a natural evolution and expansion of the preceding You are my Mother series and started unfolding in the second half of 2020. Since the main focus of Angelika’s artistic exploration were always women, taking a look into the world of manhood/fatherhood was a step into uncharted territory. Not having a close relationship with her own father, having an intimate and revealing insight into somebody else's Father/child connection, brought new insights and realizations, that turned out to be of great transforming power in her own life. As to the current date, all portraits for the series were taken in Cape Town, South Africa. Only like few other places, Cape Town offers one of the most unique melting pots, with people coming from a wide range of economic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. It was compelling to observe in this body of work how very same we all are in fundamental things of life: love for our children, the desire to give them a better life, and complete willingness to sacrifice your own for it.
