English-language curators tour at the exhibition “Human Baltic”

On 21 March at 3 PM, Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre will host an English-language tour of the exhibition “Human Baltic”, led by the exhibition’s co-curators Toomas Järvet and Kristel Aimee Laur.

As Marge Monko notes in her review of the exhibition,” in cultural weekly ‘Sirp’, black-and-white photographs of everyday life in the Soviet era can, at first glance, create the impression that ‘we’ve seen it all before.” Yet that feeling quickly fades on closer viewing: each photographer opens up the period from a different angle. In this curator’s tour, Järvet and Laur unpack that apparent familiarity and show how Baltic humanist photographers moved between the official façade and real life, striving despite the regime to preserve the human being as they truly were.

Many of the photographs on view invite visitors to read between the lines. In the Soviet period, this skill was essential for survival, as public language and visual language were often layered and ambiguous. The tour also addresses the exhibition’s broader question: why “reading between the lines” remains vital today. In an information landscape where carefully curated images and narratives compete for attention and trust, the same ability is crucial for recognising whose interests an image serves and what it leaves unsaid.
