Jean-Louis Courtinat: Masterclass and Artist Talk

Renowned French photographer Jean-Louis Courtinat will reflect on his artistic journey spanning more than four decades. He will speak about his commitment to photography, socially engaged photography, and the photographer’s responsibility when representing another person.

Through his photographs and the stories behind them, Courtinat will introduce some of his most significant works. He will discuss his long-term work with society’s most vulnerable people, the importance of building trust, and how to photograph illness, poverty, loneliness, and exclusion without letting the person disappear behind their circumstances.

When should a photographer take out the camera—and when should they put it away? How can one come close to another person without compromising their dignity or trust? What does it mean for a photographer to be not merely an observer, but also a participant? And can photography do more than make something visible—can it bring about real change?

Through his own work, Courtinat will also explore the meaning of social photography and its place in the medium’s history. The masterclass offers a rare opportunity to meet one of the leading figures of French humanist photography and hear him speak firsthand about his experiences.

The masterclass is open to anyone interested in documentary and social photography, photographic ethics, and creating long-term photographic projects. Photography students are especially welcome.

The masterclass will be held in French, with English interpretation.

Admission with an exhibition ticket or the Museum Card. Admission is free for visitors under 18. Reduced ticket for students and seniors: €6. Admission is free for members of the Documentary Photo Centre Club.
